How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe is a small set of pieces that all work together. Instead of a full closet and nothing to wear, you get fewer clothes, faster mornings and outfits that always match. Here's how to build one in a weekend.
Start With What You Already Wear
Before you buy anything, look at the pieces you reach for every week. Those are your real style. Most people find the same three things on repeat:
- A plain tee: the base layer for almost every outfit.
- One pair of jeans or trousers that fits well and goes with everything.
- Everyday sneakers you can wear from morning to night.
Keep those, and build around them.
Pick a Simple Colour Palette
A capsule works because every top matches every bottom. Choose two or three neutral colours, such as black, white and sand, and add one accent colour if you like. Neutral basics never clash, so you can get dressed without thinking.
Tops
Aim for three or four tees in your palette, one hoodie for cooler days and one overshirt you can wear open as a light layer. Our Oversized Heavyweight Tee comes in black, white and sand, so one style covers the whole palette.
Bottoms
Two pairs are enough to start: a straight-leg jean and a relaxed trouser such as a wide-leg cargo. One dresses up, one dresses down.
Shoes and Accessories
One low-top sneaker and one chunkier pair cover most days. A crossbody bag and a beanie finish the look without adding bulk.
Mix, Match and Count
With four tops, two bottoms and two pairs of sneakers, you already have sixteen outfits. Add a layer and the number keeps growing. Lay everything out once and try a few combinations so you know what works before a busy morning.
Keep It Fresh
- Wash dark colours inside out in cool water so they keep their colour.
- Replace pieces one at a time, only when something wears out.
- Each season, swap one or two items rather than starting over.
The Bottom Line
Keep the pieces you love, choose a simple palette and fill the gaps with a few well-made basics. A small wardrobe that always works beats a full closet that doesn't.
